Eight women have died and 15 others are in serious condition after sterilization surgeries were conducted on them at a family planning camp organized by the Chhattisgarh government in Bilaspur on Saturday. More than 80 women underwent sterilization surgeries at the camp.
The camp was held in Pendari area of Takhatpur in Bilaspur, which the home district of Health Minister Amar Agarwal. Bilaspur is about 110 km away from state capital Raipur.
The health officials so far are denying any negligence on their part.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each for the families of those deceased and Rs. 50,000 for those critical. A three-member panel has been set up to probe the incident and post mortems will be conducted today.
