New Delhi: The husband of national champion shooter Tara Shahdeo has been arrested near the Delhi-Ghaziabad border.
Tara, 23, who won the gold medal in the 2009 Eastern Zone championship, had alleged that Ranjeet Singh Kohli, 30, beat her and forced her to convert to Islam after they got married in July in her home state of Jharkhand.
She claimed that he posed as a Hindu and it was only during the month of Ramadan, when her husband received invitations cards for Iftar dinners to break his fast that she realized his real name is Rakibul Hussain.
The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand had investigated Tara's allegations.
But in an email sent to media companies, her husband claimed that he is a Hindu and that Tara's allegations are false and that she demanded 15 lakhs to marry him.
"Does anyone pay Rs.15 lakh to marry a girl? If he is innocent then why is he absconding. There is enough evidence against him but police are not investigating the case properly," Tara told reporters.
She also alleged that her husband and 20 other people beat her up and punished her by having a dog bite her when she resisted attempts to convert.
She says her husband kept her under close watch and when he travelled to Delhi, she sent an SOS to family members and was rescued.
