Durmukh Nama Samvatsara was welcomed with traditional fervour and gaiety across Prakasam district on Friday. State Transport Minister Sidda Raghava Rao, TDP national vice-president Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and Ongole MLA D. Janardhana Rao were among those who listened to 'Panchanga sravanam' (almanac reading) by Vedic scholar M. Dakshinamoorthy at the Prakasam Bhavan.
As part of the celebrations, both young and old alike were up early and tastefully decorated their houses with mango leaves. Ugadi 'pachchadi', made of new tamarind, new jaggery, raw mango, neem flower, green mango, and salt was consumed on the occasion to get the feel of six different tastes which underscored the need for adoption of a positive attitude to face the future with equanimity.

Sivakumari, Prakasam district Writers' Association general secretary Ponnuri Venkata Srinivasulu, historian Jyothi Chandramouli from Addanki were among those honoured on the occasion. Poetesses hogged the limelight during the Kavi Sammelan by reciting thought-provoking poems on various social issues.
