An Air India ground staffer believed to be an aircraft technician died after being sucked into the engine of an aircraft in Mumbai airport at about 8.45 pm on Wednesday. Sources said the incident took place when the Hyderabad-bound flight AI 619 was moving out of Bay 28 for its 8.40 pm scheduled take-off. The victim has been identified as Ravi Subramanian, a technician posted as service engineer with Air India. Sources said the body was badly mangled.
An Air India source said a probe has been ordered into the incident. Sources said the mishap occurred when the co-pilot mistook a signal and started the engine. Ravi who was standing close by got sucked into the powerful jet engine. A top Air India official said, “At the moment, we are absolutely clueless on how this person was near the aircraft. Only an inquiry can establish whose negligence it was." A top Directorate General of Civil Aviation official said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has been drawn in for further action.
