Sudarsan Pattnaik, a noted sand sculpture artist, has created the world's largest Santa sand sculpture at Puri beach, Orissa. Pattnaik — who aims to spread social messages through his art — has carved a message of 'world peace' in his sculpture, in the light of widespread acts of terrorism this year. He worked on the sculpture for 22 hours over two days along with 20 of his students from Sudarsan Sand Art Institute of Puri. 1000 tonnes of sand were used to create the sculpture, which currently stands at a height of 45 feet.
Previously, Patnaik — a Padma Shri awardee — had already created 8 world records registered in the Limca Book of Records. He claims to have broken his own record this time and has already appealed to the Limca Book officials to make an inclusion of this year's sculpture. The sculpture is being thronged by tourists in the pilgrim town every day to catch a glimpse of the massive Santa. The sculpture is on exhibit till January 1.
