Exuding confidence that the first phase of the Polavaram irrigation project would be completed by the year 2018, Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao on Friday expressed satisfaction over the pace with which the earthworks were going on at the project site.
Accompanied by district Collector K. Bhaskar and officials, the Minister inspected the Polavaram project site and the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation project works here. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rao said that there was an immediate need for relocating three villages partially to undertake the works, and the relocation would help accelerate the pace of the earthworks.
“At present, earthworks are in progress. German company Bauer, in association with Larsen & Toubro, is undertaking the construction of the diaphragm wall. Of the 11 crore cubic metres of earthworks, about 2.6 crore cubic metres work has already been completed," he said. “Construction of the diaphragm wall is crucial in the earth-cum-rock fill dam. It is going to be 1.75-km-long and 110-metre-deep wall, which is going to be the biggest one in the world," Mr. Rao said.
Once the diaphragm wall is constructed, the works of earth-cum-rock fill dam would be commenced at the project site. Along with the dam, the works of spillway of a capacity of 50 lakh cusecs of floodwater would also be undertaken simultaneously. “The first phase of diaphragm wall and spillway works will be completed by June this year and left main canal works will be completed by June next," he explained. Referring to the relief and rehabilitation, the Minister said that of the seven tribal villages that needed to be relocated, rehabilitation had been provided to the residents of four villages, who were already relocated. Construction of houses was in progress for the rest of the three villagers in the new locality, he added.
On Pattiseema Lift Irrigation project, Mr. Rao said that works would be completed by the end of this month and about 100 tmcft of water diverted from the Godavari to the Krishna delta in the coming monsoon.
