Despite the weekend lull in the downpour and the mercury levels rising to almost 30° Celsius, officials at the IMD have once again predicted that rains will intensify in the next 24 hours. A heavy downpour is expected tomorrow and temperatures may drop to 28°C.
"The winds along the coastline had weakened after last week's downpour, but are expected to strengthen and activate the monsoon further," said V K Rajeev, director of the regional IMD.
City doctors said they have observed a marginal increase in the number of suspected leptospirosis and malaria cases in the last 10 days. Dr Om Srivastav, head of the infectious diseases department at Jaslok Hospital, said, "Three patients had to be put on ventilator support in the ICU after suffering from high fever for a few days. Though the symptoms suggest they have contracted leptospirosis and malaria, the diseases are yet to be diagnosed. We have been treating patients with dengue on an OPD-basis, but this year the threat from the three diseases appears grave."
