HyFi the ambitious project to make Telangana state capital Hyderabad the first Wi-Fi city in the country would be rolled out in phases in the coming months. The entire city would have Wi-Fi connectivity with an initial free package and later with charges, beginning with a few Wi-Fi hotspots being established in the city by October.
Telangana IT minister K.T. Rama Rao told the media here on Tuesday that the state government was in talks with several service providers to establish Wi-Fi hotspots in the city. “We are taking a leaf out of the cities like Mountain View and Houston for offering Wi-Fi services. We are speaking to service providers. We would want to be the first city in the country that provides Wi-Fi hotspots across its length and breadth,” Mr Rama Rao said.
Mr Rao said the first phase would be rolled out in October after which the entire city will be covered in phases. He also said 4G services would be launched in Hyderabad very soon.
Hyderabad city, which has a population 12 million, is one of the major IT hubs in the country. “We want to offer Wi-Fi services to enable more citizen services,” he said.
