According to reports, Doordarshan has sacked a news reader for wrongly pronouncing Chinese president Xi Jinping as "Eleven Jinping" in a news bulletin, mistaking “Xi†for the Roman numeral “XI.†The news programme was aired at 6.15 a.m. on Wednesday and she was sacked in the afternoon.
As soon as the news about she losing job broke out, it went viral on social networking sites. While many stood up for her, only few supported Doordarshan's stand. Many people went on to ask "whether Chinese pronounce our names correctly?", few even pointed out that even many North Indians pronounce the names of South Indians wrongly and vice versa.
One wrote, "Not essential to be precise with difficult names. Are we sure that Chinese pronounce Indian names properly? And northerners say Dev Goda for Deve Gowda and Dipika PaadukoN for Dipika Padukone Makes for a good laugh"
With the news trending on FB, the news reader became overnight celebrity.
